‘musicographisme’ is an editorial performance project addressing the relation between music and graphic design – structurally and conceptually, directly and indirectly, created by the French artist Maycec.
For this proposition, the idea is to interpret ‘Vexations’, one of Erik Satie‘s composition – French composer (1866-1925), precursor in contemporary minimalist music –in a final form of an 840 pages paper publication printed with a spirit duplicator alongside a music piece in a live performance.

‘Vexations’, is one of the shortest piano piece of the Western register and will paradoxically become the longest as the pattern will repeat height hundred and forty times.
This enigmatic piece of work was rediscovered and interpreted by John Cage in an eighteen hour performance in 1963.

‘musicographisme’ unfolds in a play between a modular and sound sculpture installation, a ‘printing hut’ resembling the structure of an organ connected to metallic wires, reinforces the notion of a musical stave.
It will be plugged to microphones in order to record the sound of the printing device in real time.

The printing technique is a reproduction process by ink transfer, named spirit duplicator, reminding of the mechanism of a barrel organ or any other automatophone.

The repetitive motif, as a graphic music score, illustrating the 52 bars of music, divided in 13 beats, will bear witness to the experience of time, cadence, endurance and minimalism.

The walls of Gr_und will thus transform into a musical score.

Maycec has invited Vonverhille, founder of the music label Maturre, to perform analog and digital live sessions for this show.

_____ Maycec is a visual artist based in Paris. Touching multiple universes, her experimental vision manifests through the exploration of, and experimentation with different supports such as paper, printing techniques (Risography, photocopy, screenprinting), analog photography or by working on volumes as developed through the architectural proposal ‘Galerie D.I.N.’
Coherently with this approach and endorsing a DoItYourself attitude, her practice is also translated into self-published editions conceived as memory objects.
Her work expands with the interpretation of sound into space, visual and print, created with the installation ‘tension of humming’ in relation with the edition project ’25 :00’, along with the series of small publications ‘interference’.
Since 2012, Maycec’s work has been shown in several institutions and galleries in Europe and Morocco: Vesselroom Project (Berlin), Erratum gallery (Berlin), Le18 (Marrakech), Galerie Delacroix (Tangier), Generator Project (Dundee), Exgirlfriend (Berlin), Aether (Sofia). She has been represented at Antwerp Art Weekend as part of her residency at Frans Masereel Centrum and Le Bal during Paris Photo. Recently, she participated in Cosmos Book in Arles, Rolling Paper # 2 in Le Bal and Rebel Rebel in Frac PACA with the collective 75g / m2.

‘musicographisme’ est un projet d’édition performative appuyant la relation entre la musique et le graphisme, créé par l’artiste française Maycec.

Pour cette proposition, il s’agit d’interpréter une œuvre d’Erik Satie — musicien français (1866-1925) influent de la musique minimaliste contemporaine — appelée ‘Vexations’ sous la forme finale d’une publication papier de 840 pages imprimée avec un polycopieur lors d’une performance live et accompagnée d’une pièce sonore.

Ce morceau pour piano ‘Vexations’ est une des oeuvres les plus courtes de la musique occidentale et paradoxalement la plus longue puisqu’il s’agit de reprendre le motif en question huit cent quarante fois de suite.

Cette oeuvre énigmatique a été redécouverte et interprétée notamment par John Cage lors d’une performance de dix-huit heures en 1963.

‘musicographisme’ se compose d’une installation sculpturale modulable et sonore, une ‘cabane à imprimer’ ressemblant à la structure d’un orgue reliée de fils métalliques afin d’appuyer la notion de portée musicale. Elle sera branchée à des micros dans le but d’enregistrer le son en temps direct de la machine à imprimer.
La technique d’impression choisie est un procédé de reproduction par transfert d’encre, appelé polycopieur. Il n’est pas sans rappeler le mécanisme de l’orgue de Barbarie ou autre automatophone.
A la manière d’une partition graphique, la répétition du motif, illustrant les 52 mesures et divisé en treize temps, symbolisera certains éléments : accumulation du temps, cadence, endurance et minimalisme. Gr_und deviendra alors une sorte de partition murale.

Maycec a invité pour cette première session Vonverhille, fondateur du label musical Maturre, en relation avec la galerie Erratum, pour une performance live analogique et digitale.

_____ Maycec est une artiste visuelle basée à Paris. Touchant à des univers multiples, sa vision expérimentale se manifeste par l’exploration et l’expérimentation de différents supports tels que le papier, les techniques d’impression, la photographie argentique et le travail sur les volumes notamment développé avec la proposition architecturale Galerie D.I.N.
En cohérence avec cette approche et en approuvant une attitude DIY, sa pratique est également traduite dans des éditions conçues comme des objets de mémoire.
Son travail s’étend avec l’interprétation du son dans l’espace à travers la matière imprimée démontrée avec l’installation tension of humming en relation avec le projet 25:00, ainsi que la série d’éditions interférence.
Depuis 2012, le travail de Maycec a été montré dans plusieurs institutions et galeries en Europe et au Maroc : Vesselroom Project (Berlin), Erratum galerie (Berlin), Le18 (Marrakech), Galerie Delacroix (Tanger), Generator Project (Dundee), Exgirlfriend (Berlin), Aether (Sofia).
Elle a été représentée à Antwerp Art Weekend dans le cadre de sa résidence à Frans Masereel centrum ainsi qu’à Le Bal pendant Paris Photo.
