„Bird Calls versus Space Effects“ heißt die Performance-Installation von Matthias Mayer, die er dieses Jahr
im Mai im KH7 artspace in Aarhus (Dänemark) ausgestellt und performt hat und jetzt im Projektraum gr_und
erneut präsentiert. Matthias Mayer arbeitet an der Schnittstelle von Bildender Kunst und Musik und
verkörpert das u.a. in seinen Installationen, die mit Hilfe analoger Technik aus den 1980er Jahren in Form
von zahlreichen Tapedecks zum Experimentierfeld und Aufführungsort werden.
Die Vorstellung der Zukunft aus der Perspektive früherer Zeiten nennt man Retro-Futurismus. In diesen
Bereich fällt auch der „Steampunk“, der moderne und futuristische technische Funktionen mit Mitteln und
Materialien des viktorianischen Zeitalters verknüpft und diese in idealisierter Form präsentiert. Wenn man
eine Parallele zu den Installationen von Matthias Mayer zieht, könnte man bezogen auf seine Arbeitsweise
einen neuen Genrebegriff kreieren: den „Tapedeckpunk“.
Mit den „neuzeitlichen“ Mitteln kommt mit Hilfe digitaler Technik Sampling zum Einsatz. Vogelstimmen von
Schallplatten-Aufnahmen aus den 1970er Jahren sowie sogenannte „Space-Effects“, die in den 1980er
Jahren für DJs auf Vinyl produziert wurden, bilden das Ausgangsmaterial. Zwanzig geloopte Vogelstimmen-
Samples und zwanzig „Space-Effects“-Samples werden auf Kassetten aufgenommen. Entsprechend der
Anzahl der Samples befinden sich in der Installation die gleiche Anzahl Tapedecks. Die 40 Tapedecks sind
an zwei große Mischpulte angeschlossen, die den Live-Mix und das Battle der beiden Sound-Kontexte
ermöglichen.
Vogelstimmen treten gegen „Weltraum-Effekte“ an. Science-Fiction und Technik gegen Ursprünglichkeit und
Natur – initiiert als Battle – akustisch und visuell. In der mit Gerüststangen gebauten Installation stehen sich zwei Aufbauten mit jeweils zwanzig Tapedecks gegenüber. Die Verbindung schafft ein großes Pult in der
Mitte als Standort für die beiden Mixer.

Sporty Jesus besteht aus dem dänischen Musiker und Produzenten Jens Christian Madsen und dem
deutschen Künstler und DJ Matthias Mayer. Sie lernten sich 2011 in Berlin kennen, wo Madsen an einigen
von Mayer kuratierten Ausstellungen beteiligt war – unter anderem an der großen Gruppenausstellung “Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em…” im Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien. Aus der Freundschaft und der gemeinsamen
Faszination für Old-School-Elektro, New Wave, Post-Punk, Experimental, Hip-Hop und Elektro-Funk
entstand Sporty Jesus – ein musikalisches Projekt, das in der Kunstszene geboren wurde und in der Club-
Szene lebt.

“Bird Calls versus Space Effects” is the name of Matthias Mayer’s performance installation, which he exhibited and performed this year in May at KH7 artspace in Aarhus (Denmark) and now presents again at the gr_und project space. Matthias Mayer works at the intersection of visual art and music and embodies this, among other things, in his installations, which use analog technology from the 1980s in the form of numerous tape decks to become a field of experimentation and a performance space.
The idea of the future from the perspective of earlier times is called retro-futurism. This area also includes “steampunk”, which combines modern and futuristic technical functions with means and materials of the Victorian age and presents them in an idealized form. If one draws a parallel to the installations of Matthias Mayer, one could create a new genre term in relation to his working method: “tapedeckpunk”. With the “modern” means, sampling is used with the help of digital technology. Bird calls from recordings made in the 1970s as well as so-called “space effects” produced on vinyl for DJs in the 1980s form the source material. Twenty looped bird call samples and twenty “space effects” samples are recorded on cassettes. Corresponding to the number of samples, there are the same number of tape decks in the installation. The 40 tape decks are connected to two large mixing consoles for live mixing and battle of the two sound contexts.
Bird calls compete against “space effects.” Science fiction and technology against nativeness and nature – initiated as a battle – acoustically and visually. In the installation built with scaffolding poles, two setups with twenty tape decks each face each other. The connection is created by a large console in the middle as a location for the two mixers.

Sporty Jesus consists of Danish musician and producer Jens Christian Madsen and German artist and DJ Matthias Mayer. They met in 2011 in Berlin, where Madsen was involved in a number of exhibitions curated
by Mayer – including the large group exhibition “Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em…” at Kunstraum
Kreuzberg/Bethanien. Their friendship and shared fascination for old-school electro, new wave, post-punk,
experimental, hip-hop and electro-funk gave birth to Sporty Jesus – a musical project born in the art scene
and living in the club scene.
